The Reason Why Taps And Dies Are Incredibly Essential To The Engineering Industry

If you have ever worked in a manufacturing setting, then you appreciate just how versatile and fundamental taps and dies can be to any operation. These elements are required to cut many different types of metal in ways that form the products we use and purchase on a day to day basis. These taps and dies can be found in many standard shapes and styles that have been predetermined by the engineering community as those which are the most commonly utilized and most suitable for a wide range of jobs. However, that does not mean that there are no other taps and dies out there which do not form to these requirements. In fact, there are a wide range of taps that are designed with unique threads and sizes that are referred to as special taps.

Special taps are one of the keystones of engineering today. While standard tap and die sets will always be in wide use, it is the special taps which allow engineers the ability to produce unique threading mills and other tooling equipment to create innovative products. Whenever a special tap is produced, engineers must consider several factors, like which material they want their special tap to be manufactured from. Many engineers are huge fans of carbide taps because they are so durable and strong and can be used in almost any application. Carbide taps tend to be specifically made to handle very tough materials and metals, which makes them the most popular selection for heavy duty operations. Still there are other materials from which special taps and dies may be built, including steel, titanium or even plastic.

When it comes to making the special taps for unique thread mills, engineers also have to consider the specific outcomes set forth by their client. For example, if a cut needs to have a specific shape and grooved texture, the special tap must be produced in a way which provides those features on the product. There are also countless clients out there who make use of engineers to find ways to cut their costs when it comes to manufacturing, and developing special taps can be one of many ways in which to achieve this goal. For example, engineers can make special combined drill and tap sets which perform both the drilling and tapping operations in one quick motion. This will increase the pace at which products are created while also lowering the required time for each production run. By combining this drill and tap with the unique specifications of the client, engineers are able to provide a clever answer to budget related problems while also offering a special tap that is uniquely designed to suit the product that the client wants to create.

Engineering Designs Inside The Fluid Control Industry

In the fluid control industry, pump products are what makes success possible. Without these many different sorts of pumps, most of the systems on which we depend in modern society either would not exist or would be severely limited. Take, as an example, modern plumbing systems, water filtration systems or even your own motor vehicle. Things as basic as these need the use of different types of fluid control products, such as air operated diaphragm pumps, positive displacement pumps, drum pumps, mag drive pumps and rotary gear pumps. Though these products might sound unfamiliar to many people, they are part of the systems that we depend on day in and day out to make our society easier to live in and easier to be a part of.

Just what exactly do engineers have to do with all of this? In truth, engineers have performed a critical role when it comes to the evolution of fluid control pumps and other instruments used in the industry. Engineers have been responsible for many of the innovations made with high pressure pumps and metering pumps. They know when it is much better to use an air operated pump over a positive displacement pump, and they recognize when a high pressure pump simply is not needed for the job at hand. By checking out new pump configurations and designs, they have designed a number of the systems and products on which we rely daily so much faster and more efficient. Engineers are able to use these different types of pump technology to their advantage in order to make more successful and efficient fluid control systems, including everything from a simple fish tank filtration tank to a car transmission to a city wide plumbing system. Without engineers to develop and build these systems and products using the best pump technology, whether it is an air operated diaphragm pump, a mag drive pump, a rotary gear pump or a metering pump, we would not have the spectacular fluid control management systems that we have today.

When it comes to implementing fluid control pumps in their work, engineers need to know a lot more than what style of pump to include in their projects. It is also important for these engineers to know a lot about the pump suppliers themselves. The fact is that, getting pumps from a reliable company or brand can make or break the fluid control systems which these engineers are working on. Engineers often times have specific suppliers for several varieties of pumps, like one for positive displacement pumps, one for metering pumps, etc. However, getting one supplier for all forms of pumps is another possibility, although it does call for some heavy research in the field. Regardless, they must rely upon the success of these products to show that their work is great.

7 Tube Bending Techniques

Metal tubes are used in a number of things we take for granted each day, from anything that needs to be constructed, like buildings and bridges, to the transportation of fuel, water and even sewage. The one process that allows us to use metal or steel tubes in many different functions is the ability to bend them to the specific angles and shapes that we require.

You would be amazed at how flexible they are. In fact, check the underside of your car and you will see the results of bend tubes on a smaller scale than, say, a cross-country pipeline.

There are 7 main types of tube bending processes and they are as follows:

1) Bending Springs
The bending springs process is only used for smaller diameter tubes made from copper. In this process a strong flexible spring is inserted into the tube for added support during the bend. This will minimize the amount of distortion that occurs at the bend point.

2) Sand Bending
In order to create a bend with the sand packing process the tube is completely filled with sand and the ends are sealed off. Next the tube is heated to 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit, placed on a slab and set with pins. The actual force to create the bend comes from a winch and the sand helps to minimize the distortion of the tube.

3) Press Bending
Press bending is the first bending process that is used on cold metal tubes. In this process a die that is in the shape of the bend that is required is pressed against the tube with extreme pressure forcing the tube to conform to the shape of the die. In this process the tube does not have any internal support so there will be a significant amount of deformation.

4) Roll Bending
Roll benders are used in a series where the tube is passed under a number of rollers that apply pressure to the tube to gradually change the shape and form the required bend. There are two different types of roll benders, which are the pyramid style and the double pinch style.

5) Heat-induction Bending
With heat-induction bending a small coil is placed around the area of the tube that requires the bend. This area is then heated up to 800 to 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit and while the tube is still hot pressure is applied to bend it into the desired shape.

6) Mandrel Bending
With mandrel bending a steel rod is placed inside the metal tube to give the tube extra support, which will help minimize the distortion during the bending process. There are for types of mandrel bends and they are: Plug mandrel, Form mandrel, Ball mandrel without a cable and Ball mandrel with a cable.

7) Rotary Draw Bending
Rotary draw bending machines are the most popular type of machines when it comes to bending metal tubes for such things as handrails, furniture frames and roll cages for vehicles.

These are just seven of the techniques for steel tube bending. Many more have been tried over the years; these remain. The seven types of metal tube bending process that were mentioned in this article are only the most common types of tube bending that are used today. Technology is always advancing and as the supply for materials like steel and metal tubes increases industry leaders will find more cost effective and environmental ways to produce the metal tubes that help carry the lifeblood of our society.

Here is another place where you can find out more on how to bend steel tubing.
